paul smith shoes

I love paul smith shoes. I find the quality superb and the styling modern, yet classic enough to not look dated for years. These are the two pairs I picked up at 50% off.

First, the "Starr" brogues are from the Paul Smith Collection line and are very much like my navy shoes covered here. This collection is created by dip dying the upper, which super saturates the leather. Drum drying makes them extremely soft. They feel comfortable upon the first wearing. It is very difficult to capture photos of this supple black leather. This is my third pair from the Starr collection.

Second, the tassel loafers are part of the PS Paul Smith secondary line. I have been searching for a pair of tassel loafers for quite some time and either they have been too traditional or too fashion forward. I found these to be the perfect balance. I adore the color, as it is a neutral brown without the red undertones I tend to despise in browns. Tassel loafers can often seem too formal and I like the slightly waxed finish, which keeps them casual enough to pair with jeans.

Paul Smith Clothing

Paul Smith is a British Style Icon. That pretty much sums him up in 3 words. Nothing to me epitomises the true British gentleman than Paul Smith clothes and designs. He has been at the forefront of British menswear for the best part of 3 decades producing high quality “classic” menswear. Think tailored suits, crisp shirts, plaid jackets, cuff links, and beautifully crafted shoes. It is very much formal wear but each item seems to always have a “quirky” twist to it – whether it be a now infamous striped lining to a jacket or wallet, traditional British graphic print on a bag/t-shirt or coloured soles to a pair of shoes.

Paul Smith Clothing

The success of Paul Smith Shoes and overall business may be attributed to his understanding of his dual roles of both designer and retailer; the success of his combination of the classic and the quirky. This allows men to buy relatively traditional (and hence commercially popular) designs that offer a ‘twist’ of individuality and flair to their look. It is very popular for business men and traditionally associated with the upper class and wealthy. This shouldn’t put you off buying however as it is definitely not “stuffy” and all his formal wear just oozes class and quality.

You need to have one of his suits in your wardrobe, no matter what profession you are in. There are always formal occasions every man has to go through throughout his life and having an investment suit like Paul Smith means it will never go out of fashion and will always look right on point. Especially if you go for the traditional formal monochrome colour combinations.

He has launched a new Paul Smith Sweaters collection which MyWardrobe have picked up recently and I absolutely love. It is not to everyone’s taste, but if you are looking to freshen up your formal/work wardrobe this Spring/Summer (which all you office workers should be right now!) then look no further. The materials are quality, the cuts are sublime and they will last a lifetime. Over 30 years at the forefront of British fashion can’t be wrong.

Where Happiness Is on Clearance(2)

I was glad he took precious energy to tell me, because many of the selections seemed to have gone from crazily high prices to just mildly insane prices. For example, a lightweight V-neck sleeveless top made from an “innovative mix of natural fibers and metal so it will maintain a slightly crushed look” was down from $635 to $247, which still seems hilariously expensive for a sweater vest. A tux shirt was marked down from $475 to $185. A navy blue pinstriped suit, now $738, used to be $1,285 — something even Vincent Chase on “Entourage” would think was a splurge.

All the same, I was excited to be here. Paul Smith clothing has always held a special place in my heart. He breathed life into guys’ attire way before Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs and the men’s fashion renaissance. Mr. Smith got his start in the 1970s, opening a shop in his hometown, Nottingham, England, and then, a few years later, in London. He opened his first New York boutique in 1987, on lower Fifth Avenue, around the time I moved to the city. I would visit the store all the time. I never actually bought anything, but his designs made me excited to be an adult.

Paul Smith T-Shirts have always been crisp, dressy, optimistic and unafraid of color. He not only made it cool to wear shirts with vibrant prints, suits with purple linings, ties with floral patterns but also made it masculine. Guys would still be dressing like Fred MacMurray if it weren’t for him.

NOW Paul Smith is a global brand with 20 collections including Paul Smith Women, PS by Paul Smith, Paul Smith London, Paul Smith Accessories, Paul Smith Jeans, Paul Smith Watches and Paul Smith Pens. This outlet ends up being a repository for all of the leftovers, including some unfortunate-looking overstock — an inevitability when you are this big. The shelf of Paul Smith children’s clothing in back, for example, looked like the multicolored gack floating in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Nearby was a pair of men’s shoes in a white velvet material splattered with inky blue spots, as if a pen exploded on them, and a bathing suit brief with a shiny waist buckle, which could be worn only by someone named Sergio on Mykonos.

When I returned a few days later for the clearance sale, the store was much more orderly. In fact, it was as if Mary Poppins came by and, with a snap of her fingers, had pressed the suits and folded everything into neat stacks.

Paris Fashion Week: Paul Smith and the power of positive thinking

paul smith

PARIS -- As an unrepentant recidivist optimist, I appreciated Paul Smith's Spring/Summer 2010 collection, not only for the Paul Smith Wallets, but also because, as the last major show on the men's Paris Fashion Week calendar, it took us out on a high note, managing to hit on several of the major themes from both cities -- the varied hues of blue, the sheer, gauzy fabrics, the wrinkled, crumpled look, the emphasis on prints, the subtle references to weather -- and making us tap our toes and crack a smile and remember that it's always sunny above the clouds.

That last line may sound trite, but the invitations to Smith's show, as well as the backdrop at his show, featured an image of puffy white cloud cover and blue sky -- the kind you see when you're on a plane at 30,000 feet winging your way to a tropical vacation, about 13 seconds after you begin sipping your first mai tai. It may be raining underneath those clouds, but up here? It's all good.

Although travel and tropical climes are a traditional subtext for the men's spring-summer collections: Paul Smith clothing, Smith brought it to the fore with his narrow-collared, tailored take on the aloha shirt -- some with travel-postcard prints, others with botanical prints of pineapples (and, oddly enough, mushrooms).

The pineapple motif, a traditional symbol of hospitality (not to mention a traditional anniversary gift to my better half, Mrs. Rage) also appeared as embroidery, both on a silk varsity jacket and more subtly as tone-on-tone embellishment on the lapels of a shawl-collar tuxedo.

There was much more in Smith's fruit basket -- a cornucopia of color that included electric blues, nearly blinding reds, powerful purples (this is where the leprechaun says, "It's magically delicious!") as if each of the color slices in Smith's signature stripe had suddenly gotten its own day in the sun.

paul smith sweaters

And, just in case anyone was slow to pick up on Smith's upbeat message, one T-shirt proclaimed it (in vintage-postcard style) in a single word: YES.

As the models began their finale walk, the soundtrack abruptly shifted from the Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer" to Michael Jackson's "Thriller," and the staid strut morphed into a Mardi Gras-style dance procession, moving down the catwalk en masse.

It was an exuberant cacophony of color, sound, motion and emotion and the perfect cap on a week few at the shows will ever likely forget.

I hadn't planned on taping the show but at the last minute broke out the trusty Flip video and captured about 30 seconds of it. If you've ever looked at the runway shows and wondered if anyone could possibly enjoy themselves, click below for the answer.

Brit designer Paul Smith's shades on sale

For all the promise and inspiration the new President brought with him upon his election, Obama's presence in DC has yet to significantly impact the flailing economy (national unemployment recently hit a 26-year high, for example). It's enough to make a broke-down fashionista cut up his Paul Smith Sweaters and make his very own "Coat of Many Colors" to keep him warm on a chilly summer night at, say, the Hollywood Bowl.

Okay, obviously things could be worse... and despair not, fellow style fiends, because for those seeking high style for less there is even more hope. Discount fashion site Billion Dollar Babes is bringing high fashion to the masses at affordable prices--and doing so without the quiet desperation that comes with shopping other sites hawking out-of-season wares.

The site is currently featuring a sale on Sir Paul Smith's fashionable eyeglasses, just in time to kick off the summer. The always-hip Brit designer --knighted by the Queen in 2000 for his contribution to British design-- paired with Oliver Peoples to roll out the Paul Smith Spectacles eyewear collection that is as quirky-cool as his garments. The sale on these shades is at nearly 40-50% off, and definitely worthy of perusal. While most styles are for women, there are some men's and unisex frames to be found. Especially noteworthy is the array of classic-with-a-twist aviators Smith offers. If the economy continues its slump, you can be sure aviators will still be cool next summer!

Founded in Hollywood in 2001, Billion Dollar Babes pioneered the multi-designer sample sale with its “real world” shopping events in major cities worldwide. What started as an “insiders” event at LA's House of Blues has, over the years, grown into a fashion phenomenon complete with flowing cocktails, beauty bars and swag bags. These events, favorites of even A-listers in search of a great bargain, have been regularly held in Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, Chicago, London and Dublin with participating designers ranging from international design houses Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino and Chloe, to American contemporaries like Diane von Furstenberg, and LA-local faves Catherine Malandrino and James Perse. Get on their mailing list today-- it's free (the best price of all, just ask any celebrity)!
